Gladys de Rojas de Odar of the San Francisco de Borja Rotary Club accompanied us during this adventure. Mamacona is a private horse ranch. Gladys owns two award-winning horses at the ranch, which we were able to ride. Some GSE members found this adventure to be a little more than what they expected...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S_N6g1mzluI/AAAAAAAAALU/Y08pzEfqtpY/s320/scared+horsey.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472852676749530850" />

The team spent the afternoon in San Pedro. Some of them even asked us for our phone numbers and addresses.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-z-phbpynI/AAAAAAAAAKM/ZViIWtivrjM/s320/P1080696.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471027636650756722" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-z-LJYKETI/AAAAAAAAAKE/VeVw4MEH56k/s320/P1080701.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471027114797568306" />

While some young students surrounded Kristy and Madeleine, the "Quincy Perkins Fanclub" jumped at the opportunity to take a picture with their favorite group member.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-z6D-XLjgI/AAAAAAAAAJk/8XJDmjHBZ_E/s320/P1080714.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471022593535086082" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-z6kxm1ikI/AAAAAAAAAJs/U9J9l9OW_Ds/s320/P1080705.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471023157046774338" />

The Pueblo Libre Rotarians continue to support their local school with materials as state funds unfortunately arrive inconsistently.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-z71nRGCoI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/3YgoNIgWXIs/s320/P1080712.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471024545840630402" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-z8Yaz9SCI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/TtF5EfSkubc/s320/P1080709.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471025143792617506" />

After our visit to the school, we had a delicious lunch of lomo saltado (see Madeleine's post on food below).....yuuuuuuummmmmmmmm!!

Evening came quickly and it was time to visit another Rotary Club, this time Club El Rimac. The dinner was held at the 5-star Hotel Novotel in downtown Lima, and it turned out to be another splendid night with our new friends. The team's fifth presentation was very smooth and the dialogue we shared with Club Rotario El Rimac reassured our convictions that although we live may live in different continents, the mission of The Rotary Club is still the same. El Rimac, the club of Governor Hildebrando Bustamante, is led by Marcela Ventura de Noel and supports and funds many projects throughout Peru.

<img style="display:block; The town has 2 small canals (no larger than 2 feet wide at any point) that crosses the town in the shape of an X. These canals carry non-potable water to the town´s foliage. The water is treated in the park by way of biological, physical and mechanical processes. Below are photos of the rocks that pull different minerals out of the water, ponds that contain specific lillies that pull other chemicals out of the water, and a large holding tank that supplies the canals.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-yd__1pgsI/AAAAAAAAAHs/pTavvtCAmgU/s320/Imagen+129.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470921370142081730" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-yd_Q_FguI/AAAAAAAAAHk/1Ai-sNc2dv8/s320/Imagen+090.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470921357565199074" />

The park also has 3 different jogging paths (3km, 12km, and 21km) that are clearly marked and wind around the city and Pentagon. In the heart of this Peruvian slum is a small school that hosts extremely poor children and teaches mothers how to read and write. To say that what we experienced there was earth-shattering is an understatement.

The city itself, in its broad reach, rests in what looks to be the far side of the moon. Each with minimal supplies. Teachers not only teach reading and writing but wear many other hats. Mothers who attended classes there were given roses and a raffle was held where each one was presented with a simple gift. Like a wristwatch or a picture frame.

We walked through the streets of this barren town, past nailed-together homes some of which held more than 20 kids under one tin roof. It is a town of mothers. The fathers have left, sometimes out of desperation or sometimes in search of work. We were invited into the home of one such woman who wakes at 4AM each morning in order to make milk which she then sells at 6AM from the front door of her home.

We were all brought to tears at some point by the experience. The day started at the local zoo, El Parque De Las Leyendas. The park, founded in 1964, is unique in that it was built around Huacas (pictured below).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-pJCtqZczI/AAAAAAAAAE8/oAQAy7k-6Qg/s320/P1080513.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470265008360878898" />

The Huacas were used by pre-Inca civilizations like the Limas (0-600). El Parque is home to 2140 animals from over 260 different species, representing Peru's 3 main natural regions: Coastal Zone (Costa), Highlands (Andes o Sierra), and Eastern Lowlands/Jungle (Selva).
After another great lunch, the team visited 2 projects with the Brena Rotary Club. The first, Los Ninos de la Calle, is a program established for kids who live in the streets of Lima. The run-down, two-story building currently houses 22 children from the ages of 8-22. The children have been abandoned, dropped off there, or have parents who are drug addicts or alcoholics. They are there voluntarily and may leave if they choose to. However, if they choose to stay, the only requirement is that they attend school everyday. After school, the front of the building (pictured below) serves as a restaurant that the children run, operate, and administer with the help of their 2 adult counselors.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-pNe66VtbI/AAAAAAAAAFk/nevLgfcmkng/s320/P1080542.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470269891000251826" />

The children cook and serve the meals to the local customers. The Rotary Club of Brena hopes to help the program by providing them with new cooking materials and equipment, as well as uniforms for their restaurant.
The team then visited El Centro Educativo Beatriz Cisneros, a center that specializes in meeting the basic needs of children with physical, mental and emotional disabilities such as mental retardation, down-syndrome, autism, etc. The Brena Club hopes to help the center by providing equipment for teachers and therapists as they work to help the children.
The Brena Club welcomed the group at their weekly meeting, and the night ended with traditional Peruvian Chinese food called Chifa.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-pP5T8t19I/AAAAAAAAAF0/oYM-qLcBojg/s320/P1080554.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470272543420962770" />

The team will visit the Rotary Clubs of Nuestra Senora de Gracia, Pueblo Libre, and El Rimac to close out their busy week.

Recap and Overview

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-lgrzM0MDI/AAAAAAAAAEs/wydFPyzC32Y/s320/Imagen+012.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470009528012779570" />

The Miraflores District is one of the main tourist attractions with its stunning views, beautiful restaurants, and rocking nightlife. Now that we’re in week 2 of the trip, better orienting ourselves in the city, figuring out the suicide showers and tweaking our internet connections, we’re ready to give you more of a flavor for our time in Lima. Of course this entails stories and photos of what we’ve seen so far, but for now I’ll focus more literally on the flavor.

A short anecdote to begin… At the end of a packed week, we celebrated mother’s day with our host families and then moved into our second homes. My future host mother called up the first one to find out the essentials: what I ate for breakfast, any food allergies or preferences. Apparently, she was told that I was pretty easy going and would eat anything, but was warned that I would take pictures of all the food. This is true. And apparently this makes me the GSE foodie, so it’s my job to share this:

LOMO SALTADO
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-ja7mOtpGI/AAAAAAAAAD8/7hoku7E3wWQ/s320/GSE+1+324.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469862464850863202" />
On Saturday we went to Pachacamac to see where the world was created. Then we ate lunch at a "restaurante campestre," which was arguably the most photogenic site on our trip so far. (And it had a petting zoo.) We watched them make these french fries as we walked in and they were the most delicious I've ever tasted.

CHUPE DE CAMARON
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-jbMHH5fNI/AAAAAAAAAEE/dmiTIzFYujM/s320/GSE+1+322.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469862748558556370" />
Sandee hadn't tasted this since 1969...

CHICHARRON DE PESCADO
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 263px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TQL0mS6nMTA/S-jdHqaaTcI/AAAAAAAAAEM/OZi-nZnUGpI/s320/GSE+1+049.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469864871155355074" />
It doesn't have to be pork fat, it's also delicious with fish! Working with PromPeru - the country's export and tourism promotion board - they chose 60 images of tourist destinations across Peru, from which 22 will be selected for the board game. Too bad we can't take our own photos next month and send them in for consideration... Still, we can all participate by voting now on their website!

Back to the GSE - we're still in preparation mode, putting the finishing touches on our presentation and reviewing the first draft of an itinerary sent from the Rotarians in Peru. In more than 2000 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 33,000 Rotary clubs.

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self."

District 6990
Group Study Exchange is always one of the highlights of any Rotary year. Teams of young professionals from the local community between the ages of 25 and 40, led by a Rotarian, are assembled and provided a travel grant to a foreign country. Over four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

In a typical four-week tour, the team participates in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the host district’s conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

Here in District 6990, we look forward to hosting our visitors from other faraway Rotary districts and forming bonds that last a lifetime. We’re also proud to send our representatives from District 6990 to the district that we paired with to learn the customs and business operations of that region.

This year we are exchanging teams with District 4450, Peru. The Inbound Team arrived in October 2009. Our Outbound Team is scheduled to leave for Peru in May 2010.

South Florida Rotary Team to attend District Conference in Ica, Peru

The South Florida team, led by Sandee Roberts, will attend the District Conference in May in Ica, Peru.
